The first step in the establishment of educational projects was the CanSat project. The CanSat is an educational satellite, bearing all components of a satellite, such as sensors, actuators, and GPS, housed inside a 500-ml can. The launch of the CanSat on May 15, 2013 was the first of its kind in the Sub-Saharan Africa. It attracted both

The CanSat is a tool that provides an affordable opportunity for educators and students to acquire basic knowledge in Space Engineering. It also provides an experience in Satellite engineering. The CanSat project gave the students practical training in the development of an educational satellite. They were able to conceptualize the mission, plan, design, build and test the educational satellite on the ground, and to operate and improve iteratively other CanSat prototypes.

The ANU-SSTL continues to use its CanSat as a tool in educating high school students, young students and Space Science enthusiasts about Space Science, Satellite Technology and STEM education as part of its outreach programmes.
